President's Message

Dear Friends:

I am delighted to have this opportunity to share with you my thoughts regarding the future of the Urban College of Boston. This is a very exciting time for the College. In fact, when the trustees approached me and asked if I would work with them in creating a bold new future for the College, I was thrilled and honored. It felt strangely serendipitous … something that was simply meant to be. I had partnered with ABCD for a number of years and share the same passion for its mission of access and opportunity. All of my leadership experience of the past two decades — as college president, urban school district executive and college-ready program innovator for low income students — seems also to have led inexorably to this opportunity. The timing was perfect, and had the unmistakable feel of MLK's "fierce urgency of now".

For the past thirty years, the Urban College of Boston has developed a reputation as a credible provider of high quality programs to early child care and human services professionals. It has also been regarded as an extraordinary resource for adults in career transition as well as New Americans seeking access to higher education and needing to improve their English language skills. This is a solid and worthy programmatic mission, impacting hundreds of appreciative students per year. But the current platform is no longer sufficient or sustainable in this rapidly changing economic environment where competition for students is intense and unrelenting, and where access to funds — especially federal and state subsidies — is increasingly unreliable, capricious and diminishing significantly.

Given these challenges, I am pleased to share with you our thoughts regarding a promising new future for the College. The trustees and I are in the process of launching a transformational strategy for the College, one that will leverage the vast platform of ABCD and the many dedicated friends, partners and donors across the city. Our ultimate goal will be to build a more robust and sustainable business model while remaining faithful to our core mission and values. This strategy will require that we aggressively diversify our program offerings, raise the profile and value proposition of the College throughout the region, and take our institution to an entirely new level financially.

We are building an institution that is unique to the city of Boston and surrounding areas. We understand that many students enter college without the proper skills and experience needed to endure the rigors of higher education. Ultimately, they are set up to fail. As Boston's Premier Foundation College, our mission is to provide our students with the learning tools needed so that they can navigate the waters of two and four year colleges more successfully. We also provide skills and professional networking prospects for those students looking to pursue promising employment opportunities. At the Urban College of Boston, not only are we invested in your education, but we are committed to your future success.

We are also exploring partnerships with school districts, government entities and after school providers to support an array of emerging and unmet professional development needs. Conversations are also underway with other colleges and universities to partner in delivering baccalaureate and masters programs to our many constituents eager for advanced educational opportunities. Our overall partnership strategy is to avoid unnecessary duplication, competition and overlap while leveraging resources and capabilities to maximize impact and enrich the UCB brand — a win-win for the College and its partners.

I trust you share our enthusiasm for the exciting potential that presents itself at this time. The College is poised at a kind of "strategic inflection point" where market circumstances are compelling us to innovate, reinvent our future, and become an even stronger, more vital enterprise. Since our beginnings as a program of ABCD nearly thirty years ago, the Urban College of Boston has served thousands of low income and under-represented students and has enabled numerous immigrants and minorities to achieve the American dream, impacting our community and families for generations. It is now time to capitalize on this extraordinary history and programmatic platform to scale our efforts and take the College to a whole new level. Thanks to the encouragement of our UCB trustees and our partners at ABCD, our goal will be to create a more dynamic and diversified business plan while aggressively expanding the number of individuals and organizations that will benefit from our programs. In this regard, I hope I can rely on the continued support of our many friends and supporters across the city. The mission of the Urban College of Boston has never been more vital or more relevant. We are now uniquely positioned for exceptional growth and community impact.
