Henry
J. Johnson, Director of Enrollment Services and Registrar,
Receives Doctorate

Boston,
Mass., December 22, 2003 -
Dr. Linda Edmonds Turner, President of Urban College
of Boston, recently announced that Henry J. Johnson, Director
of Enrollment Services and Registrar, has received his Doctorate
in Education from the University of Sarasota, Sarasota,
Florida.
Dr.
Johnson joined the Urban College of Boston, soon after it
received its Charter in 1993. Prior to that he had been
employed as Assistant Director of the MBA Program at the
University of Massachusetts at Boston.
Dr.
Johnson was familiar with the uniqueness of the Urban College
Program through its affiliation with Roxbury Community College
where he held the position of Assistant Director of Continuing
Education and Community Services. Therefore, his move to
the Urban College of Boston seemed like a natural fit. At
that time he was “impressed and intrigued with the
efforts of Bob Coard, CEO of Action for Boston Community
Development (ABCD), and his yeoman efforts to eradicate
poverty. Mr. Coard has always believed that a college education
is an important strategy in combating poverty and UCB is
a result of that belief.”
A
native of Dominica, Dr. Johnson came to the United States
after serving as Acting Executive Officer of Personnel in
the Ministry of Communication and Works. He attended Boston
State College, where he received a Bachelor of Science in
Public Administration in 1978, and two years later received
a Masters in Public Administration Degree (MPA), from Suffolk
University. Although his main interest was in Public Service,
his career path took him through the halls of academia,
whereupon he decided to pursue studies in Educational Leadership
and in May 2003 received the Doctor of Education Degree
from the University of Sarasota.
An
active member of the Caribbean community, Dr. Johnson lives
in Mattapan with his wife Donna, and sons Husani and Jelani.
He is also the President of the Bay State Dominica Association
Inc., a non-profit, volunteer organization founded in 1965
by a group of concerned Dominicans living in the Boston
area. Its mission is to address the needs and issues facing
the disadvantaged, by providing assistance and opportunities
to individuals and organizations in Dominica and the United
States as well as to raise funds for scholarships.
Dr.
Johnson stated that his position as Director of Enrollment
Services and Registrar at UCB “is enhanced by the
presence of a vibrant group of professionals under the strong
leadership of President Dr. Linda E. Turner, whose effective
managerial and leadership style has energized staff and
the adult learners that the College was created to serve.”
He summarizes that “the College provides a warm and
friendly environment where a diverse group of adult learners
with similar needs and experiences, can receive and share
valuable educational information.”
