Course Offerings in Several Languages
 |
The Urban College provides adult learners the opportunity
to fulfill their dreams. |
UCB continues
to offer courses that are comprehensive, innovative and exciting.
Courses are offered in several languages in the field of early childhood
education. Bilingual certificates in early childhood education are
offered in both Spanish and Cantonese. These offerings in various
languages enable child care providers to meet the basic requirements
of OCCS. Courses are offered at UCB's downtown location and other
sites in an effort to provide easier access to higher education.
These off site locations are in various Boston neighborhoods as
well as in the Cambridge, Somerville, and Chelsea communities.
Innovative
course offerings include "Boston's Immigrants," a course
designed by noted Boston author and historian Anthony Sammarco, offered
as a Humanities core course to provide all students with a greater
understanding of and appreciation for the various cultures that have
contributed to the richness of Boston.

ESOL
(English as a Second and Other Language) courses in Basic Writing
and Introduction to Writing and Grammar provide UCB students the
opportunity to develop their writing skills by relating to class-readings
and responding to themes of identity, culture, and education.
Partners
in Education
Unique to the Urban
College of Boston, since its inception are its ties with other
colleges and universities. These relationships developed historically
to expand and enrich the educational experience of our students
through the Urban College Program. Today, through its partnerships
with the Child Care Career Institute, ABCD’s Community
Partnerships and Child Care Choices of Boston, along with the
Higher Education Information Center, the Urban College of Boston continues to augment
its programs and curriculum.
Additional partnership
activities exist between Urban College and the Asian American
Civic Association
and other ABCD Area Action Planning Councils (APACs) and Neighborhood
Service Centers (NSCs). Suffolk University and Lesley University
provide comprehensive library and information services, augmenting
the resources available through UCB’s Learning Resource Center.
The Urban College of Boston is also a member of the Boston Higher Education Partnership (BHEP), a group of prestigious colleges and
universities located in the Greater Boston area, focused on providing
support to higher education through the Boston Public School system,
for its students.

UCB advisory committees
are strengthened by the knowledgeable participation of faculty
specialists from cooperating
institutions. These team efforts exemplify the full membership
of UCB within Boston’s celebrated higher education community. Collaborative two-year institutional
partners include Bunker Hill, and Roxbury Community
Colleges; collaborating four-year colleges and universities include
University of Massachusetts/Boston,
University of Phoenix, Suffolk, Springfield, Lesley, and Northeastern
Universities; Wheelock, Emerson, Regis,
and Endicott Colleges; and most recently Harvard University
Extension School.
Articulation Agreements Between Urban College of Boston
and Other Institutions of Higher Education
An
articulation agreement formally recognizes that the Urban
College of Boston and other higher education institutions
agree to work together to provide educational opportunities
for currently enrolled and potential students. Agreement
to this alliance requires a commitment of institutions
involved to facilitate the transfer of associate degree
conferred students into a baccalaureate degree program
without jeopardizing the intended mission and stated
goals of the institutions. An agreement defines a structure
through which articulation on all levels can be supported.
Every institution has entrance and program requirements
which are unique to the institution. However, it is the
desire of the Urban College of Boston to develop a working
plan designed to allow the maximum number of transfer
credits for students. Currently, formal articulation
agreements exist between Urban College of Boston and
Lesley University, Suffolk University, Emerson College,
University of Massachusetts/Boston, University of Phoenix,
and Wheelock College. For additional information regarding
articulation agreements, please contact the office of
the Academic Dean at (617) 348-6353.
UCB offers a
range of services and activities designed to support,
strengthen and encourage student effort, and
to assist in overcoming problems which may interfere with
student progress. These services and activities are tools
created to enhance a student’s ability to manage
and direct his or her own learning and career development
over a lifetime. Services are provided by the Urban College
in association with ABCD and other community organizations.
Working collaboratively, these groups provide assistance
in the critical areas of daily life, educational achievement,
professional advancement, orientation, advisement and counseling,
career planning and development, and cultural enrichment.
