UCB Graduation Huge Success

Monday, June 03, 2013 3:48:00 PM

On Sunday June 2nd, 100 graduates, with their friends and family, gathered at the historic Cutler Majestic Theater to celebrate.  Many were moved to tears as our 2013 recipient of the Jill Alexander Award for Excellence, Cecelia Young, shared how she overcame homelessness on her journey toward getting her Associate's degree at Urban College. First Lady of Boston, Angela Menino, and First Lady of Massachusetts, Diane Patrick, were present at the ceremony, receiving the College's first Honorary Degrees in Early Childhood Education. Both women have been long supporters of Urban College as an outpouring of their advocacy for women, children and families.  Both the Globe and the Herald covered Sunday's graduation, remarking on the diversity and diligence of Urban College students and the unique role UCB has in the Greater Boston community.

Faculty Spotlight: Ken Grout

Thursday, May 24, 2012 9:11:00 AM

Ken Grout is our first faculty spotlight! Enjoy!

Ken Grout is Urban College of Boston’s resident superhero. A consultant to the college as well as teacher extraordinaire, Ken is well-liked by everyone.

Ken currently teaches Speech Communication, Intro to Academic Writing, and College Writing I. If that’s not a full plate, he has other consulting clients and also teaches at Emerson College.

“My favorite part [of teaching] is the students; of course teaching can be frustrating, but when you feel like somebody gets it, like you have made a difference, it’s all worthwhile,” he said. And the rave reviews from UCB’s students are no joke: Ken got a standing ovation as 2011’s commencement speaker.

Ken completed his undergraduate work at Drake University, his graduate work at Emerson College and is finishing up a Master’s in Education from Cambridge College this May (woo hoo!).

Despite Ken’s busy lifestyle (writing, acting, teaching), he “very much enjoys going to the gym and playing racquetball,” he said. “I also enjoy meeting interesting people and learning something new.” But you won’t find Ken playing his dusty saxophone (a tidbit his students probably don’t know).

“I still have it; I don’t still play it, but I still have it.”

You can find Ken chatting with staff, working hard, and making his students laugh (and do schoolwork) on most days, but if you’re still looking for some more information on Urban College’s super-Ken , “like” his professional facebook page, www.facebook.com/kengrout or check out his website, www.kengrout.com. Read his 2011 commencement speech and a bunch of short stories both inspiring and beautifully written. Ken is truly a man with a mission—and we’re supremely lucky to have him!

Welcome!
