College Of Boston Receives $108,000 Grant
Millennium
Partners Leadership Grant To
Aid Low-Income Students
Boston,
Mass., February 13, 2002 - President Lee J. Hines, Jr.
announced that the Urban College of Boston recently received a $108,000
Leadership Grant from the Millennium Partners to expand and enhance
the Urban College's recognized successful efforts in assisting disadvantaged
residents of Boston's inner-city neighborhoods in obtaining the
higher education credentials that will enable them to move into
meaningful jobs and careers.
The
Urban College of Boston was established by Action for Boston Community
Development (ABCD), Boston's official anti-poverty agency. Robert
M. Coard, President/CEO and John Drew, Executive Vice President
of ABCD along with Anthony Pengaro of the New Commonwealth Center
Limited Partnership spearheaded securing the generous contribution
that will enable the College to expand its work in providing college
access for inner-city residents.
Dr.
Hines, stated: "This outstanding contribution will assist the students
of the Urban College as they strive to attain the necessary professional
training to provide themselves and their families with economic
empowerment which play an important role in revitalizing the neighborhoods
of our city. We are very grateful to ABCD and the dedicated Millennium
Partners who have made this accord possible."
The
Urban College of Boston, a private two-year college, offers associate
degrees in Early Childhood Education, General Studies and Human
Services Administration. The College reaches out to non-traditional
students who understand the value of higher education and its importance
in their lives and the lives of their families. Currently, almost
800 students are enrolled at the Urban College. The majority of
Urban College students are working parents who juggle full-time
jobs, childcare and their studies. The college's success stories
are numerous, with many graduates now holding significant positions
in government, business and community agencies.
The
Urban College of Boston was recently granted accreditation from
the New England Association of Schools & Colleges, Inc. through
its Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. The College's
mission is to provide higher education opportunities within a supportive
environment by implementing a curriculum that emphasizes career
preparation and skill development to residents who are "under-served"
by traditional colleges.
