Dr. Linda Edmonds Turner Named President of Urban College of Boston

Boston, Mass., March 4, 2003 - The Board of Trustees of the Urban College of Boston (UCB) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Linda Edmonds Turner as President.

“We are extremely fortunate that Dr. Turner has agreed to lead the Urban College of Boston as it continues its important mission of providing access to higher education to Boston’s inner-city residents,” said John Nucci, chairman of the UCB Board of Trustees. “We feel confident that under Dr. Turner’s leadership, the Urban College will continue to thrive and move forward as a key member of the higher education community providing innovative associate degree and certificate programs and strong collaborative linkages with existing colleges and universities in Boston.”

In 2001, the Urban College of Boston was granted full accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

“I am thrilled to be chosen to lead the Urban College and carry its important mission forward,” said Dr. Turner. “This college is unique and all-important to the people of Boston, the Commonwealth and the nation. It offers a national model for providing non-traditional students access to higher educations in an environment and with the support systems that enable them to stay in school, graduate and go on to make a difference for themselves, their families and their communities. I am so impressed with the accomplishments of this college and eager to help it to continue to grow and serve our community.”

Dr. Turner has a strong and diverse background in higher education, marketing and business development. Prior to coming to Urban College, she was Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts where she provided marketing expertise and strategic support to the president and senior management staff, spearheading high-impact marketing initiatives and forging strategic education and marketing partnerships.

She also served as a Partner at Crewe & Turner Consulting in Washington, D.C., where she provided marketing and new-product development services for the company that offered consumer research/data analyses and media program design services.

Earlier she was a Harvard Administrative Fellow at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she participated in a program that offered university administrative exposure to exceptionally promising professionals. She was also Senior Strategic Marketing Manager for New Business Development at Polaroid Corporation in Cambridge, Massachusetts from 1991 to 1993. Prior to that time she held a number of strategic marketing and new product development positions at E.I. duPont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, Delaware and New York, New York.

Dr. Turner holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration and MBA from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia; a master’s degree from Michigan State University; and a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. She lives in Milton, Massachusetts with husband, John Turner, and their 10-year-old son, Johnathan.

The Urban College of Boston is a fully accredited, independent two-year college that currently serves more than 700 students each semester through associate degree programs in Early Childhood Education, Human Services Administration and General Studies, as well as certificate and continuing education programs. The College is the only higher education institution in Boston that offers comprehensive bilingual early childhood educations classes in Spanish and Cantonese.

UCB began in 1967 as a collaborative higher education program with area colleges and universities under the auspices of Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD). In 1993 the College was chartered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and authorized to grant associate degrees. In 2001, Urban College received full accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC).

Urban College remains a close partner of Action for Boston Community Development, the nation’s largest community action agency and Boston’s official antipoverty agency. The College provides inner-city residents who might otherwise never go to college with the opportunity to achieve higher education credentials and skills tied to upwardly mobile careers. UCB offers a highly supportive environment that integrates a college education with career preparation, skill development, and access to ABCD’s supportive services and career development programs.
