Student Services Offers Support and Information

Dorothy Chaves, LRC Tutor, advises a student during registration.

UCB offers a range of services and activities designed to support, strengthen and encourage student effort, and to assist with overcoming problems which may interfere with student progress. These services and activities are tools created to enhance a student's ability to manage and direct his or her own learning and career development over a lifetime. The Office of Student Services at the Urban College serves as a resource to help students more effectively meet their personal and academic challenges, and also serves as a referral source to many community agencies and organizations.

Students are encouraged to utilize the personal, academic, and professional counseling resources of Student Services. Strict confidentiality of counseling relationships and records is maintained at all times. In addition to counseling outreach, the Office of Student Services sponsors student specific workshops and career and professional guidance. Career planning and development is a continuous process that includes academic and professional assessment at entry to UCB, career-related course work, required Professional Development seminars, internships and field work, and career counseling and workshops. Advisement and guidance are an important part of UCB's student services. At registration, students are designated an academic advisor. The student and advisor meet regularly to review and discuss the student's goals and objectives. The advisor recommends course selection and sequence and remains a key point of contact and source of guidance throughout the student's tenure at UCB. In addition to the ongoing guidance provided by the academic advisor, each student has access to staff, available to offer information on financial aid, assist with internships and field placements, engage in personal counseling, and provide referrals to other agencies and organizations.

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) offers an encompassing range of academic guidance and hands-on support services. The LRC is staffed by professionals who assist students in strengthening their writing, reading, math and learning skills. Assistance is also provided in English as a Second Language. Instruction and tutoring are related to classroom assignments, thereby fostering skill development while contributing to success in dealing with course content. The LRC is open Monday thru Thursday from 4:00 pm until 9:00 pm.

Through the support offered at the Urban College of Boston, students learn strategies and techniques necessary to secure professional, personal, and educational success.

Orientation

All entering UCB students are invited and encouraged to participate in orientation. Orientation activities provide an introduction to the College and its programs, faculty, administration and staff, a review of college policies and an opportunity to meet other students. At orientation, students are assigned an academic advisor. The student and advisor meet regularly to review and discuss the student’s goals and objectives. The advisor recommends course selection and sequence and remains a key point of contact and source of guidance throughout the student’s academic career at UCB.

Personal Counseling and Support

The Office of Student Services serves as a resource to help students more effectively meet their personal and academic challenges. Students are encouraged to utilize the counseling resources and should call ext. 6394 for an appointment. Strict confidentiality of counseling relationships and records is maintained at all times. Student Services also serves as a referral resource to many community agencies and organizations which may be of personal, financial, professional or other assistance. Other services include individual and group counseling; workshops/seminars geared to students’ needs, and career and professional guidance.

Advisement and Guidance

In addition to the ongoing guidance provided by the academic advisor, each student has access to staff, available to offer information on financial aid, assist with internships and field placements, engage in personal counseling, and provide referrals to other agencies and organizations. Staff will also assist students in developing peer support groups for academic, professional, and social networking. With their guidance, students will be introduced to the wide range of human service resources available throughout the Greater Boston community.

Outreach/Attendance Monitoring

As part of our effort to assist students with satisfactorily meeting their academic goals, Student Services contacts students with inconsistent attendance at the earliest opportunity. The goal is to provide personal outreach and information on academic policies and options. Counseling and advising are provided as well. Student Services makes referrals to tutoring services and other resources offered by the LRC.

Career Planning and Development

At UCB, career planning and development is a continuous process that is fully integrated with academic programs. This process includes academic and professional assessment at entry, career-related course work, required Professional Development seminars, internships and field work and career counseling. Workshops are offered periodically on such topics as résumé preparation and interviewing techniques. This comprehensive approach assists the student in identifying and developing career objectives. Assistance is provided in résumé preparation skills, and professional opportunities are posted regularly in the student services/faculty area. Through the support offered, students learn strategies and techniques necessary to secure successful and fulfilling employment.

Cultural Enrichment

The central downtown location of the Urban College overlooks the historic and spacious Boston Common. Situated between downtown Boston and the Theatre District, the "city campus" location provides various opportunities for cultural and multicultural enrichment. Information on art, dance, music, theatre, historical, ethnic, and other events is posted and regularly disseminated to students.

UCB Newsletter: Urban College Connections

The UCB newsletter, Urban College Connections, is a publication of the Office of Student Services. The newsletter seeks to provide timely and relevant information to the Urban College of Boston student body and alumni. It gives students the opportunity to find out about current Urban College and community events and is a medium for democratic expression. Students are encouraged to participate and gain experience by writing for Urban College Connections.

Student Literary Publication: The Student Express

Urban College has many talented students whose creativity is shared through the UCB publication, The Student Express, a collection of students’ poetry and writings published in both the fall and spring semesters. Students are encouraged to contribute their literary talents to The Student Express, which is published by the Office of Student Services.

Urban College of Boston Alumni Association

Urban College of Boston, through a generous grant from Moses and Hannah Malkin, established the Urban College of Boston Alumni Association in the spring of 2004. The Alumni Association open to all degree and certificate recipients, strives to reunite and strengthen relationships between alumni and their Alma Mater by fostering opportunities to call members to action in support of the college. The Alumni Association organizes a number of annual events to promote and provide services for UCB and its alumni to encourage continued growth, both personally and professionally, supporting both existing and prospective students. It also seeks to assist in securing gifts to the college and expand annual giving among alumni. Those interested in more information about the UCB Alumni Association may contact the UCB Alumni Advisor, Olivia Dybing, at dybing@urbancollege.edu.
