Lighting the Path of Opportunity: A Night to Remember at Urban College of Boston

This week, Urban College of Boston proudly hosted the Light of Opportunity Celebration, bringing together new supporters, longtime champions, partners, and community advocates. It was more than an event: it was a powerful affirmation of our mission: to expand access to education, strengthen workforce-aligned degrees, and create clear pathways for adult learners to thrive.

The evening was enriched by inspiring voices who shared their perspectives on why this work matters:

  • Dr. Yves Salomon-Fernández, President of Urban College of Boston, spoke about the urgency and hope driving our vision for the future.

  • Joan Becker, Board Chair, highlighted the unwavering commitment of our leadership and community to student success.

  • Tom O’Brien, Foundation Chair, emphasized the critical role philanthropy plays in opening doors for adult learners.

  • Kristin McSwain, Senior Advisor for Early Childhood and Director of the Mayor's Office of Early Childhood, delivered a powerful message about the connection between early education, workforce pathways, and family stability in Boston.

  • Krystal Ray Jackson, Urban College alumna, shared her remarkable story of perseverance and transformation—bringing to life what opportunity truly looks like when barriers are removed and people are empowered.

The energy in the room was palpable: hope, determination, and a shared belief in our students’ potential.

Together, we are building brighter, stronger, and more secure futures for adult learners across our communities.

In that spirit, a $100,000 matching gift challenge has been generously offered by Dr. Connee Counts. Every contribution made by December 31 will be doubled, accelerating the opportunities our students deserve.

Whether you joined us in person or are supporting from afar, you are part of this movement. Thank you for believing in our students and for being a light that guides their way forward.

Join us in making an impact today. Together, we can transform lives.
