Am I Ready for College? How to Know if Now is the Right Time

Considering Your Next Step

Going to college for the first time, or returning after a long pause, can feel overwhelming. How do you know if you’re ready? What type of college is right for you?

At Urban College of Boston, we believe you belong here. Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn more, earn more, and pursue a career that brings financial stability and economic mobility.

College is a big decision, and it’s normal to have questions. That’s why we’re here to support you every step of the way. Our application process is simple and straightforward. Each semester, you’ll enroll in tandem with an advisor who will guide you through your options, help you plan your schedule, and ensure you’re on track to reach your goals. Student success isn’t just something we talk about, it’s at the center of everything we do.

Before You Apply

As you explore your options and get ready to start your application, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind.

Application Requirements

To apply to Urban College, you’ll need a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent credential. If you’ve completed a degree or any other coursework outside the United States, our enrollment specialists will help review your transcripts and determine whether credits may transfer.

Understanding the Time Commitment

A 3-credit course at Urban College typically requires about 9 hours of dedicated time per week, including lectures, coursework, and assignments.

For most students, this is very manageable, even when taking multiple courses per semester. Still, it’s important to consider your work schedule, family responsibilities, and other commitments as you plan.

The good news? You won’t have to figure this out alone. Our advisors will work with you to build a schedule that fits your life.

Is Urban College Right for You?

Urban College serves many types of students, and may be a great fit if you are:

  • A recent high school graduate who isn't sure a traditional 4-year college is the right next step.

  • Working while earning your degree or certificate.

  • A multilingual student who wants the option to study in both your native language and English.

  • Looking to improve your English while completing your degree or certificate.

  • Concerned about the cost of college and avoiding student debt.

Most of our students graduate debt-free through grants, scholarships, and other financial assistance programs. Many also don’t pay anything upfront.

Flexible Course Schedules Built for Real Life

One of the biggest concerns prospective students have is how to fit college into their already busy lives. At Urban College, flexibility is built into our programs.

We offer both 16-week semesters and accelerated 8-week terms, so you can choose the pace that works best for you. You can also decide how many courses to take each term based on your schedule.

Our course formats include:

  • Asynchronous Courses: Learn on your own time with pre-recorded lessons and course materials you can access anytime.

  • Synchronous Courses: Join live online classes with your professor and classmates.

  • Hybrid Courses: A combination of asynchronous and synchronous courses that gives you the best of both worlds.

  • Flex Online Courses: A blend of asynchronous lectures and assignments with optional (but highly encouraged) weekly synchronous meetings to enhance your learning experience.

This flexibility allows you to work, care for family, and pursue your education without putting your life on hold.

For Students Educated Outside the United States

Many Urban College students come to us with degrees or well-established careers in their home countries. If you’re building a life and career in the United States, earning a certificate or associate degree from a U.S. institution can help strengthen your professional opportunities.

At Urban College, you can:

  • Improve your English earning your credential

  • Take courses offered in Spanish, Mandarin, and select courses in Haitian Creole

  • Prepare for the workplace culture of U.S. businesses and institutions

Being bilingual is a powerful career advantage, and we’re here to help you build those skills
